God's Word is faithful. It works and it never fails. A leader, as well as any other believer, must hold fast to the Word of God he or she has been taught. There are many who question the integrity of God's Word and want to argue. A gainsayer is one who contradicts the Word and through warring over the Word questions its integrity. We are to hold fast to the Word we have been taught so that we can exhort and convince - not by arguing - but simply by presenting God's wonderful faithful Word.
I Timothy 1:3b-4 . . .charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
We need to focus our attention on the faithful, sound doctrine we have been taught and not give heed to fables and endless genealogies. To focus on these things ministers questions. Now, there is nothing wrong with a respectful question asked in meekness by a person who honestly wants to know what the Word says. But some questions are not honest and should be avoided if we are to hold fast to God's Word.
I Timothy 6:3-5
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not
to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and
to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
He is proud [to
envelop in smoke],
but doting about [to
have a sick appetite for - to harp upon] questions
and strifes of words
[logomachia - war of words],
whereof cometh envy, strife, railings [blashpemia],
evil surmisings [hateful suspicions],
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds,
and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness:
from such withdraw thyself.
We are to withdraw from those who have a sick appetite for asking questions and fighting over the Word. This behavior causes envy, battles over the word, blasphemy against God, and hateful suspicions. We need to hold fast to the wholesome words we have been taught and avoid those who simply want to question the integrity of God's wonderful Word.
II Timothy 2:23-26 But foolish [moros - moronic or stupid] and unlearned [uninstructed] questions avoid [beg off - decline to answer], knowing that they do gender strifes [give birth to battles]. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
We are to beg off or decline to answer foolish questions that arise out of a lack of instruction in God's Word. Rather we should present the simple truth of God's Word as we have been taught, patiently and with meekness. Dumb questions give birth to battles over the Word. We are called to hold forth the Word not to fight over it.
Titus 3:9-10 But avoid [be a bystander to] foolish [moros - moronic or stupid] questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretick [schismatic - divisive] after the first and second admonition reject;
When foolish questions arise we are to be bystanders. Do not get involved with fights over the Word. God's Word says that these questions are unprofitable and vain. Don't get caught up in them. When someone wants to be divisive, these verses say we present the simplicity of God's Word to them twice and then we reject. Be a bystander to these battles. Once you have the Word of God do not let anyone talk you out of it. Hold it fast.
II Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
These verses are written to leaders. God's Word is sound. It is faithful. We must never let go of that sound word taught us. We must hold it with believing and love.
I Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things;
hold fast that
which is good.
God's Word is good and we must hold it fast. Whenever the
Word is presented we must check it against that faithful, sound word that
we have been taught. If that which is being presented lines up with
the Word of God we are to hold fast that which is good.
II Thessalonians 2:13-15 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you , brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
There are traditions in the world. There is also a tradition of belief of the truth that we have been taught that we are to hold fast. God chose us to believe His Word. We have been set apart (sanctified) by believing God's Word in Romans 10:9-10 and we have been set apart by spiritual birth. We have been called to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. We must hold fast to that good, sound, faithful word that has been delivered unto us and reject the traditions of the world that contradict it.
Mark 7:1-9
Then came together unto
him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
And when they saw some
of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen,
hands, they found fault.
For the Pharisees, and
all the Jews, except thy wash their hands oft, eat not, holding
the tradition of the elders.
And when they come
from the market, except thy wash, they eat not. And many other things
there be, which they have received to hold,
as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
Then the Pharisees and scribes
asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the
elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
He answered and said unto
them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written,
This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far
from me.
Howbeit in vain do they
worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandment
of God, ye hold the tradition of men,
as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
And he said unto them,
Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye
may keep your own tradition.
These people were holding the traditions they had been taught. However, these traditions of the elders were not the Word of God - rather they were the commandments of men which contradicted God's Word. Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to hold fast the traditions they had been taught by him. Paul taught them God's Word. If your tradition is "belief of the truth" then hold it fast. If your tradition is a commandment of men then reject it. We are to hold fast that good, sound, faithful word that we have been taught; not the doctrines of men who contradict God's wonderful Word.
Luke 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Luke 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
When we keep God's Word as we have been taught
we are blessed and bring forth fruit with patience. Once you have
received God's wonderful word - never let anyone talk you out of it.
Hold it fast because it is a good, sound, faithful word.
